Whether you find it ironic or not, drummer LC Crawford’s roots stem from his background in gospel music. As he recounts, his childhood and his growing-up years in Chicago, was spent around music, “My grandmother was the organist in church; and wherever I went, there were always drums,” he says. He counts himself lucky that unlike most, he “wasn’t banging on pots and pans, but real drum sets.”
Also surprising is that it was his association with gospel groups that enabled him to go on tour to other countries – like Switzerland in 2001 while with the group Renewed Spirit and to Australia in 2007. Other gospel groups include Montage Pheloan, Adoration and Zion Movement. It was only till Crawford moved to Las Vegas in 2006, that he ventured into other types of music – specifically with group “Perry,” which played in Paris Las Vegas for more than a year, and then “Le Freak.”
Where most of Purple Reign’s cast members either play various other musical instruments or sing back-up, Crawford’s is loyal to the drums. As he puts it, “I don’t sing at all. I don’t do anything, I play the drums, that’s it.” The proof? He’s proud of the fact that he’s endorsed by Soultone Cymbals since October 2010. While, as he says, “It’s not like my own series of cymbals, but I can put in an order anytime,” adding “I can get a full rack of cymbals which can last me anywhere from six months to two years.” As for the “cool factor” – he can have his name engraved on it, and in a design custom-made by him.
Crawford admits that he’s getting his feet wet and venturing out into producing music, and doing a little bit of composing, too but says that “It’s too early to tell, I’m just exploring my options and see where it takes me.”
The former physical therapist major went to college for a year, “but music was so strong in my blood and in my brains; and one opportunity led to another and music became my sole occupation.”
