Whether she’s floating high-above the stage, performing amidst swaths of silk, as an aerialist, or firmly rooted on the floor, dancer Sonya Kat, is surely in her element. A fourth generation performer, she has been in the industry for as long as she can remember, “I grew up backstage, and I’ve danced since I was two.” Her great grandparents and grandmother were in Vaudeville, while both her parents were in various Strip shows throughout the years.
Although born in Las Vegas, she was raised in the Midwest and started working full-time at the age of nine. Given this background, she knew even back then, that Vegas was where she was meant to be. “Literally, the day I turned 18, I packed everything in my car and started driving from St. Louis,” she says, adding, “I like the style in Vegas and I wanted to check it out.”
Kat lost no time in finding work, first in “Masquerade – Show in the Sky,” then in “Sin City Kitties” in Primm, and now, part-time at “Fantasy” and of course, full-time at “Purple Reign.” All this she accomplished in three short years, and amidst a life-changing event – she fractured her pelvis and wrists during a performance – and couldn’t work for three and a half months.
Being the youngest in the group – she recently turned 21 – has its drawbacks. Asked if she’s seen the movie “Purple Rain” on which the show is based, she herself admitted, “I have seen the movie before, but it’s a little bit before my time, but you can’t really grow-up in show business without knowing a little bit of Prince,” adding, “I love Prince, especially to dance to. And I like the vibe of the show” Another reason, she says, is that she can showcase her own personality and that there’s some acting involved, and she can “have fun with it.” In case you’re wondering if singing is something she’s going to tackle next, Kat has this to say, “Never say never, but I’ve always had a fear of microphones, but I’m trying to break that.”
